A Quick Overview of the Hāpai Access Card

The Hāpai Access Card has partnered with Nimbus Disability in the UK to bring the card to Aotearoa New Zealand. The card was started about five years ago in the UK and now has over 30,000 cardholders and 1500+ businesses.

The card is nationwide in the UK and international.  In Aotearoa New Zealand we have started in Christchurch, but have now launched in Selwyn and are directly working to bring on businesses in Nelson, Blenheim, and Queenstown with other locations soon to follow. 

The card costs NZ$30 for three years.

What do you get?

  • A plastic card with your picture, name and unique ID number. It will also show the barriers you face due to your disability - up to nine as shown below.

  • A way for you to identify businesses that will recognise your card and who are committed to help reduce the impact of the barriers.  Many will offer a discount.

  • The ability to check out via our website how each business responds to the accessibility barriers. Each one has a dedicated webpage, with photos and video to help you get the feel of the place. 

 

 

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the card, you will need to provide evidence that you have a physical, or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term effect on your ability to carry out out normal day-to-day activities. 

Your card can have up to nine barrier icons, depending upon the additional information you provide us about your accessibility challenges.  For information about these barriers go to Guidance on Symbols.
